One of the most popular hybrid searches is for hybrid trucks and suvs, as people eagerly await announcements of new hybrid electric, diesel, and flex fuel pickups, as well as hybrid commercial trucks, semis, freight trucks, and more. And although full hybrid trucks are a thing of the future, it’s a not so distant future as a couple are expected in 2008, with more coming in 2009 and 2010. While it’s true there were some mild versions of hybrid pickups from Chevy and GMC, they are currently discontinued until late ‘08, when GM plans to reintroduce the Silverado and Sierra with their more advanced, two-mode hybrid system (autoweek.com). In addition, we are hearing announcements from Peterbilt about their plans to roll out several heavy duty hybrids, including a hybrid semi truck (read more here). For truck lovers, the best is yet to come.

And while hybrid pickup trucks from Toyota, Dodge, and other truck manufacturers are already rumored, it’s top companies like Freightliner, Kenworth, International Truck and Engine, and Eaton that are getting much of the deserved attention. A recent article appearing in the Kalamazoo Gazette stated that Eaton’s medium duty, diesel-electric hybrid drive system will begin production in 2008, and for trucks equipped with the hybrid technology, it could provide up to 60 percent better fuel economy, reduced emissions, and reduced noise levels. In addition, idling time could be cut up to 87%! Hybrid trucks are about to make some “quiet” noise. Learn more about other future hybrids here.
